Just wanted to write and say how much we appreciated the "private tour"
for our family. We arrived almost at closing time and you accomodated us. My wife and three boys were quite impressed
with the "up close and personal" views of the BATS. This is by far one of our favorite cave tours. Hope you are doing well and we hope to
see you again real soon.

Bats!
War Eagle Cavern is home to over 75,000 bats! The two main species that inhabit the cave are the eastern pipestrelle
bat and the gray bat.
By far, the most common bat is the small eastern pipestrelle.
|

Colony of Gray Bats
|
These small bats spend all year in the cavern, using the ceiling as a roost during the day in the summer months,
and they hibernate in the cavern from November through March.
The other common species is the gray bat. Unlike the pipestrelle, the gray bat is a colonial bat. The grays use
War Eagle Cavern as a maternity roost during the spring months. |

Eastern Pipestrelle Bat
|
Over 30,000 females roost in single colony, nurturing their babies until they are old enough to fly around the
first of July.
In fact, it is for this reason that we conduct no spelunker tours until the 1st
of July; we don't want to disturb these colonies. |
